Tubao noun /'tu.bau/ A handwoven headscarf usually worn by male members of some tribes in the Visayas and Mindao. It became popular in the early 1980's as an all-weather cover of activists as they rallied against the dictatorship. It proved handy in warding off the sting of teargas fumes.
The tubao was chosen as cover design of the souvenir program of the 9th OSCI Awarding Ceremony to celebrate the culture, talent and inventiveness of Filipinos and their search for knowledge and excellence. For today's breed of outstanding students, success must be viewed as an extension of a storied past and a colorful tubao to ward off the biting fumes of stereotypes and parochialism.
