Written Examination, January 23, 2009

Most folders of the nominees contain achievements in Tagisan ng Talino, a DepEd mental competition, which excludes private schools. January 23 at the Social and Cultural Hall of DepEd Division of Iloilo City was a real Tagisan ng Talino, because in this occassion the best brains of the public and private schools met in the Written Examination component of the screening for the 10 Outstanding Elementary Pupils and Ten Outstanding Secondary School Students of Iloilo.

As usual, the dreaded portion was the Mathematics portion, especially because, this time, examinees were asked/forced to show their computations. No computation, no correct answer. Based on initial results, examinees with documents from MTG and MTAP competitions gave good performances. But sometimes, situational problems could prove tricky.

In high school...

Papano po ba padadaanin ang isang bilogan at manipis na table top sa pintuan, kung ang diameter ng table top ay mas mahaba kesa sa taas o lawak ng pintuan? Yon pong mga nakasagot ng mas mahirap na mga tanong sa Trigo, Geom o Stat, pero halatang hindi pa nakaranas magbuhat ng table top (take note: table top; hindi table o mesa) ay natulala. Hindi daw po talaga puwede.(And because the question was in Pilipino, they wrote in as many Pilipino words na hindi talaga pupuwede.) Papano po ba?

Itanong mo sa mga kasambahay. O sa tambay sa kanto. O sa sikad driver. Na halatang tagabuhat talaga. Sasagutin po kayo, ipasok niyo sa pinto na naka-diagonal. Naka-slant baga. Eh di pasok!

Sa Mathematics, tawag po diyan ay Phytagorean theorem. Dapat buhatin ni Phytagoras!

And only very few knew where kilometer Zero, among the hundreds of kilometer readings besides highways in the island of Panay, is located. And who the hell were Marilyn Esperat, Jocjoc Bolante, and Eliseo de la Paz? What happened to Ilonggo culture and tradition? Are hurubaton, belasyon and luwa as French as Parles Vouz to the examinees? Do high school students know the meaning of recession, the current IN word?

In the elementary level, the examinees showed a lot of promise. Surely the Math problems were what BS Education grads call HOTS problems. HOTS for Higher Order Thinking Skills.

If today is a Friday, what will be the day 100 days from now. We need the remainder. But a calculator do not give an explicit remainder. Again the MTG and MTAP veterans stood out.

We can surmise the effect of computers and other gadgets to our kids. Does anybody read/listen to the news? Sino ba ang tinatawag na mga bagong bayani? Sagot ng marami, yun daw mga doktor na naglilingkod sa kanayunan. Eh di mali ang gobyerno.

But the most surprising observation: The exam was two and a half hours long, starting 9am. And nobody bothered to take their snacks even if their baons were just beside them!@

Misajon, TOSSS 2006, qualifies to AYLC ‘09

Joshua Misajon, TOSSS 2006 and incumbent Central Philippine University Republic President, made it to the short list of the 75 student leaders who qualified to the 11th National Ayala Young Leaders Congress scheduled on February 10 to 13, 2009 at the San Miguel Corporation - Management Training Center in Alfonso, Cavite.



Of the 254 colleges and universities with at least Level II Accreditation from all over the country that were invited, 101 schools nominated a total of 538 student leaders

The scoring system was based on the following criteria: (1) most significant leadership positions; (2) most significant awards; (3) community and part-time work involvements; (4) high school performance; (5) mentor/adviser assessments; and (6) colleague assessments.

Misajon’s leadership story had etched a mark in the interview primarily of his servant leadership values. The delegates will be able to rub shoulders with servant leaders ahead of their time and from various fields of expertise. His story will light one (1) of the 75 more impassioned hearts for service and nationhood.

“This is indeed a great opportunity as a student leader to show my capabilities to help build a strong republic,” Misajon quipped in an interview.

The bulk of this year’s delegates hail from Luzon, however the Iloilo province has the biggest contingent ever. The three-day training is the Ayala Group’s virtual commitment to nation building.

VENUE FOR WRITTEN EXAMINATION

The written examination component of the Search for Ten Outstanding Elementary Pupils and Ten Outstanding Secondary School Students of Iloilo for School Year 2008-2009 will be on January 23, 2009, 8:30 am, at the Social and Cultural Hall, Department of Education, Division of Iloilo City, Gen. Luna St., Iloilo City.

Examinees are requested to bring their school IDs, blue ballpens, calculator, and snacks (if needed).

Thursday, January 8, 2009: Deadline for Submission of Nominations

All nominations/documents to the Search for 10 Outstanding Elementary Pupils and 10 Outstanding Secondary School Students of Iloilo for SY 2008-2009 must be received by DepEd as of close of office hours on Thursday, January 8, 2009 (Division of Iloilo c/o Mrs. Gremia Baclayanto; Division of Iloilo City c/o Mr. Jerry Lego; and Division of Passi City c/o Mrs. Irma Ganela).

There is no extension of deadline.

Peñol in Pambansang Gawad sa Ulirang Kabataan

Jo Jan Paul Peñol of Pavia National High School made it to the finals of the 4th Pambansang Gawad sa Ulirang Kabataan last June 8 - 12 at the Bayview Park Hotel in Metro Manila. The Pambansang Gawad is a project of the Department of Education in line with the 110th Anniversary of the Philippine Independence. Peñol was nominated by the Department of Education - Division of Iloilo after he, a public high school student from the province, topped the list of the Ten Outstanding Secondary School Students of Iloilo.

A total of 51 students from the public and private schools in the country were nominated. Only 3 nominees were from Western Visayas.

In the 3rd Pambansang Gawad sa Ulirang Kabataan, Victor B. Robinson III of Ateneo de Iloilo - SMCS, also made it to the finals. Robinson was a TOSSS of Iloilo awardee in SY 2006-2007.

Seventeen (17) finalists from among 51 high school nominees from public and private schools were chosen winners in the 4th Pambansang Gawad sa Ulirang Kabataan by the Department of Education – Special Events Unit at the Bayview Park Hotel, Manila, June 8-13.

The awardees are all achievers, leaders and active community workers. All graduated with top honors in their secondary schools last year.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya said the Pambansang Gawad recognizes the achievements and contributions of the nation’s outstanding students in their school and community.

“Our young people are looking for role models and these Gawad awardees are here for all the Filipino youth to emulate,” Malaya added.

The national winners went through a rigid process. The criteria for selection were personality and character – 20 percent, critical thinking – 10 percent, rhetoric – 10 percent, quality and content – 10 percent and credentials – 50 percent.

Some five evaluators, eight interviewers and three judges from the academe, the government and private sectors were invited during the three-day selection process.

The judges during the final interview were Commissioner Raul Dominic Badilla of the National Youth Commission, Atty. Pablo Trillana of the Asian Development Bank of the Philippines and Justice Antonio Nachura of the Department of Justice.

The Pambansang Gawad coincides with the observance of the 110th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.- DepEd
