Immoderate greed

Once in a while, we publish in this blog articles from other on-line sources which we think are relevant and can 'tickle' the minds of our readers. Foremost, our readers are outstanding students who are not only outstanding in school, but are also outstanding purveyors of opinions and actions in their respective communities.

Herewith are two links to the Inquirer.net February 9, 2008 articles Immoderate Greed and Guava Lessons: Of Rural Folk and Greedy Pols related to the revelations of Rodolfo Noel Lozada, Jr. about the scrapped NBN-ZTE deal of the Arroyo government. Our intention is not to influence the thinking of the students, but to keep them up-to-date as regards issues hounding the country. It must be noted that the Written Examinations given to the Qualifiers last January 21, 2008 included questions on General Information and Current Events. The results showed that issues like the Sumilao (Farmers) Case, BioFuels Act, Nobel Prize, and even the rationale of the February 11 Panay-wide Holiday, may not be known to the students even if these could affect their lives.

To the very least, the articles could be regarded as exemplars that can be analyzed, copied, or critiqued as to their journalistic and academic merits.

The Inquirer editorial Immoderate Greed narrates, "It was a story the public had heard a few times before, but the fresh retelling of the national broadband network (NBN) scandal by Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. still came as a shock even to a people grown cynical about their government and public officials. For it’s only now after Lozada mentioned the instruction he received from former socioeconomic planning secretary Romulo Neri to “moderate their greed” that the Filipino people are starting to get an idea of the unbridled greed and breathtaking rapacity of the personalities involved in the now aborted transaction."

Opinion: Immoderate Greed

Headlines/Nation: 'Guava lesson:' Of rural folk and greedy pols
